Hotel Review of the Dalton Hotel & Suites Victoria BC
23 January 2012
When I arrived I asked to have a view of Yates (north) or Blanshard (east).
Being mid-January, I figured this would be any easily accommodated request,. (I
was the only car in the parking lot that night). The nice lady at reception told
me she would love to do it but it was up to her manager who would be in at
3pm...could I "wait and speak to him". "Sure" I said...when I did come back the
grumpy looking man told me it was "too noisy" and he would give me a room with a
"close view".
So i get upstairs and the room is on the WEST side of the building, facing a
local bar/lounge, and looking directly into an office building. not the north or
east side as i requested. he was nice enough to call up and make sure i made it
to the room ok (besides the smack in the face from the "old hotel" smell, i had
made it) and when he did i asked him about the thermostat. He told me where it
was and after about an hour the baseboard heater had not clicked on. Of course,
during this hour i had unpacked and made myself comfy. so you think i would get
the room with the view for the hassle of having to SWITCH rooms right? Nope, not
here. I had to freaken move all my unpacked crap over...what a pain in the butt,
after i just wanted to relax after my long drive down the island.

Accommodating guests in the off-season is how you build a reputation for the
high season. The Continental Buffet was a surprise with the DIY Waffle Maker but
it could have had a better presentation. Also, the usual muffins, bagel and
prepacked quick oats, honey and peanut butter. Plastic utensils and paper
plates. Of course it is only served until 10am so if your plan was to sleep in
while on vacation you wont if you want the buffet.
I found the elevator and staircase quaint and I did see the potential for this
to one day be a gorgeous "Boutique" hotel. oh and i must say, I slept like a
baby!

I brought my parents here and they really enjoyed their stay. My mom loved the
convenience of the location being right in the core of downtown. My dad loved
the continental breakfast, especially the waffle maker. The building was built
over 100 years ago. It's a little bit old-style, but charming and the room was
very clean and comfortable. One staff member named Cam was so friendly and
funny. Thumbs up to him.

Hotel was clean, and comfortable, but there was a stale (don't know how else to
explain it) odor in the elevator, and stairwell. The room was simple, very
clean, but a little outdated. The hotel was under some renovations, so they may
be fixing this all up. The best part of the hotel was the phenomenal location.
Literally parked the car (they charge $10 per night for above ground, unsecured
parking) and walked everywhere. The worst part was the parking. Like I said
above, $10. you park in the little parking lot next door (not underground).
Google map it. Another point. In regards to breakfast. When we went they had,
Muffins, Bagels, (Make it yourself) Waffles, Plain oatmeal, Raisin Bran, Rice
Krispies, Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Various Teas, and Coffee. Hopefully I
didn't miss anything.
