Hotel Review of the James Bay Inn Victoria

Cheap stay, close to Victoria center and rooms are ok - old but clean

First off, let me say I would stay there again. The location was great, lovely
neighborhood, restaurant food very good, cheap (reserved in conjunction
w/Victoria Clipper deal from Seattle), outstanding staff (polite and helpful).
Pub was cozy and great for evenings at the bar - very convivial. My less than
sterling rating has to do with the room. The color scheme was a very off-putting
ice blue and puce (mauve gone wrong). Granted, it matched the hideous printed
bed coverlet to a tee. There was some exceedingly ugly plywood furniture and a
metal rack for hanging clothes. The only attractive thing in the room was an
original Victorian painted cast-iron radiator. They need some serious guidance
on decorating what could be a premier property. And another discordant note -
the dining room is all 70s disco mirrors and weird wavy ceiling.
Room Tip: Ours was one floor up from lobby and overlooking parking on the side,
but we had little noise, a nice view of trees, fall foliage and the Parliament
building in the distance, so I don't understand the complaints I saw from
previous guests.

Recently stayed there with a wedding group ages 1 1/2 - 82 and had 5 rooms in
total. They each had their own character (definitely not cookie cutter decor),
but all were clean and warm. Some even had electric fireplaces! There was coffee
in the lobby for those early morning needs, and the food in the restaurant was
good. This hotel is very close to the waterfront, well within walking distance
of the Parliament buildings and other attractions. Set in a lovely neighborhood
(there were still flowers blooming in November!). Adequate parking. Reasonable
rates.
The only drawback for us was that there is a flight of stairs up to the main
lobby, and no elevators inside - hard on the 82 year old, and the mother
carrying the young child.

We recently stayed in the two-bedroom cottage with our two small children and it
was perfect for us. The decor is far from chic - think garage-sale finds - but
the house was immaculately clean and the beds were comfortable. We really
appreciated the large living room, long dining room table (we entertained
friends every night) and the bright kitchen. We liked the location too - walking
distance to the beach, Beacon Hill Park, and downtown Victoria

The hotel is located just a few blocks from the inner harbor. The staff was very
friendly and helpful. Rooms could use some updating, but they are very clean and
comfortable. Beware there is no elevator, but that was not a problem for us.
