Review of the Strathcona Hotel Victoria

While the location is great and the building itself
looks like it would be a regal place to stay it is
anything but. You are required to place a deposit down.
They claim its in case you stay an extra night, but I
have a feeling its more likely because rooms get
trashed.
The room itself was clean but extremely small. The
building walls prevented the sound from the 3 pubs
downstairs from creeping in. However the sounds from the
other guests could be heard as if they were coming from
inside our own room. For the first time ever I had to
call the front desk as the neighbors music was too loud.
Its a great location and perfect if you are there to
party. Otherwise choose another hotel

OK.....value for location verses value for money......On
a good point, I did not come away with any bed bug
bites, the bed was actually very comfy. Shabby washed
out curtains with no block out, and single glazed
windows allowed plenty of street noise. Once I put my
ear plugs in all was well. Glad I had hubby with me, the
room had an adjoining door, only locked by a flimsy
slide snib. The couple next door must have been watching
a funny movie, what else could all those giggles be??? I
enjoyed the seagull, that knocked at the window and must
be very accustomed to being given treats...the gull
liked "Cheerio's" Basic breakfast, night club noise
Friday night, Saturday wasn't so bad. Upside, close to
waterfront and restruants, bus service good.

I would never ever stay here again or recommend that
anyone stay here. I am surprised it has not been
inspected and closed down. When you register the
receptionist asks you to pre authorize the total amount
of your stay on a credit card, plus an additional
$100.00 deposit in case you "Trash the room". This in
itself should have been enough of a warning. However,
nothing could prepare you for the room. The decoration
is in itself depressing awful - Mustard painted unevenly
plastered walls, with no decoration, and the furnishings
including the bed, bedding, curtains and carpet were
badly stained. Everything in the room appears to have
been purchased from a Victorian charity shop and
desperately in need of a good cleaning. Seriously only
the brave could sleep comfortably in this place so be
warned. The area around the hotel is also frequented by
substance abusers and homeless people at night .

I stayed at 'the Strath' with my 3 daughters and their 2
girlfriends for a fun filled trip to Victoria in June.
We absolutely loved it. They have 4 bars and a rooftop
restaurant with a volleyball court! It's very close to
the waterfront and they provide free parking a half
block away. And to finish off your trip a very good
continental breakfast in the morning. One of the best
places to stay in Victoria for sure.

Sadly we only stayed 1 night but found this hotel to be
right in the heart of things - especially as we had to
carry luggage to the seaplane terminal the next morning.
The room was fine for the price & the pub attached was
great for dinner and a few drinks. I asked for an
upstairs rooms with any possible to views. Cant comment
on noise from rooftop bar as it was closed when we were
there.
