“Good place to visit”
This older motel is on a bicycle trail and just off the
Gorge Waterway. It is all one could want for a good
restful clean sleeping place.

When we walked into our room, the smell hit us. I can't
even describe what the smell was. It was like old fags
and wet dogs, even though the rooms are supposed to be
non-smoking. The air conditioning unit had plastic both
on the inside and out. The large indoor pool was closed.
The stairs stank of urine. I was glad I was only there
for 1 night, my parents had to stay there for 3 nights.
The first night they were there, the noise from the bar
kept them awake. When they rang down to reception to
complain, they got no answer. The smell in their room
wasn't much better. The next day when leaving their room
for the day, they were asked if they need their room
servicing and they told the maid that they need clean
towels. This is just what they got. Nothing else was
done. It is the first time ever that they have stayed in
an hotel and never had the bed made. They could wait to
leave after there stay.Review of the Howard Johnson Hotel Victoria

Our one bedroom had a good sized kitchen with coffee
maker, toaster, microwave, full size fridge, table and
chairs, along with plates and cutlery. There was ample
room for 3-4 adults as there was a queen bed in the
bedroom, a king bed and double bed couch in the living
room. We opened the window on arrival each day as it was
musty smelling. Our wheelchair accessible room was close
to the elevator, and a steep ramp into the side
entrance. There is an elevator and accessible entrance
at the front of the hotel. There were two comfortable
double beds. The bathroom had a roll in shower. The
toilet was a front transfer only. THE WHEELCHAIR RAMP AT
THE SIDE ENTRANCE IS DIFFICULT TO GET UP, TOO STEEP AND
UNEVEN AT THE BOTTOM TO GET DOWN ALONE. The onsite
restaurant is not fancy but had good pub food and served
mainly beer. It opened at 11am as its owners are
separate from HoJos. Price and accessibility were the
main attractions for us, and we would stay again.

I was travelling solo and also this was just a pleasure
trip. I sought out accommodations with cooking
facilities as I hate to eat out alone and I also want to
stay on my heart healthy diet so by preparing my own
food, I know what I am eating. Exercise is also
important to me as well as being in a safe neighbourhood
for walking outdoors. This hotel had all that I needed.
The property is older but welcoming and well maintained.
My king size bed was comfy and the room was very large
as we use to see in hotels years ago. The room was well
fitted with room darkening drapes, sofa, t.v. (with an
amazing channel selection), table and chairs as well as
a writing desk and complimentary internet. The cooking
area had a full size fridge with separate freezer, stove
with oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, kettle and
even an old fashioned "brown bettY" tea pot! Good
quality pots and pans allowed me to prepare my meals
like at home. They even supplied the dish soap, clean
dish cloth and towels every day as well as my decaf
coffee and salt and pepper. The beddings were fresh and
fairly new. This was a non smoking room and the blankets
were not full of cigarette burns hidden under the
spread. My room overlooked the gorge and was very quiet
even when there was a full house several times during my
7 night stay! A full house several times a week tells
one that others believe in this place. My bathroom was
spotless as was the whole room and again, the manager is
blessed with great staff who bend over backwards for
you. So if you are looking for "bang for your buck" and
good clean accommodations please don't hesitate to stay
here. I will certainly return given the opportunity.

While the room was fine, there was no dining room for
breakfast as was advertised on the website. The hotel
staff were not helpful and the restaurant was little
better than a sleazy bar. The pool closed a 9pm. Rental
car service which was also advertised on their website
was non existent.
Area recommendations
I would recommend the city centre
Getting around
cabs are handy and inexpensive. There is little parking
in Victoria..
