Guest Review of the Bedford Regency Hotel Victoria BC

I don’t ask for much when I’m staying at a hotel, a safe neighborhood, a
clean room and wireless internet and an affordable price. I’ve stayed at
the Bedford Regency a couple of times now and they deliver on these
criteria. They get bonus marks for being in an amazing location right in
the heart of downtown Victoria, they are a walk away from everything
downtown. They are also right next to my favorite breakfast spot, and a
short walk from Lotus Pond, the best Chinese restaurant on the west
coast (that’s right... I’ve tried them all). The Bedford is not luxury!
It is a cheap, safe, and clean hotel with the basics plus wireless
internet and a mini fridge. Although their more expensive rooms are
quite nice and a lot more flashy. The building is very old which I
really enjoy. The service is okay for my needs but I’ve never really
asked anything of them so I’m not sure how to comment on that.

This hotel is a good value because of its central location. It’s a bit
run down, and the walls are thin, so you hear everything. The main
problem is that the staff are not helpful nor informed. The hotel has
closed its restaurant recently, so you would expect them to be able to
suggest a place for breakfast. They might act as if you’re the first
person to ever ask this. They didn’t even know the great breakfast spot
50 feet away! Definitely not service oriented.

I was very pleasantly surprised by my stay there. The room was
comfortable and the location was superb. We were treated very nicely,
and felt safe here. We enjoy shopping at the Bay Center which is
literally about 20 steps out the door of the Bedford. And all up and
down the street are great shops!

My mom and I have been taking yearly girls trips to Victoria since I was
a baby, and when I was 16 we discovered the Bedford. (I am 24 now) We
LOVE this hotel, and always stay here! It's right in the heart of
everything! You are within walking distance of wonderful shopping, and
restaurants, China town, Market square, the waterfront, and museum,
everything you could possibly want is pretty much right outside your
door.
We have never eaten here, as we prefer Milestones just 4 blocks away,
The Keg just 2 blocks away, Nautical Nellies 2 blocks away, and the
Cactus Club about 4 blocks away. Murchies coffee shop right next door is
our FAVORITE place to go for breakfast or a quick snack,

We have always been very comfortable and happy with our rooms at the
Bedford. We usually get the Deluxe room with 2 Queen sized beds,
overlooking Government. (Yes, it's noisy, but we bring ear plugs and
take gravoll before going to bed. We love the view so we put up with the
noise) There is a little fridge for us to keep our wine and cheese in.
The beds are SO comfortable, with crisp white sheets and bed spreads
(that's a big plus for me! I HATE those aweful multi coloured bed
spreads that you have NO idea what's hiding on them! Ick!) It is
definitely an older building, but they have done nice upkeep to it, and
it's certainly not in bad shape.

Fantastic location, you can't really get better than this place. While
there I stayed in a nice large room towards the back of the hotel, with
all the usual facilities and a free paper each morning. It isn't the
most up-to-date place but not shabby either. Had a good time and would
return happily, very quiet during my 3 night stay and I hate noise!

Stayed here for 2 nights - excellent location we were with walking
distance to pretty much everything we wanted to see. Our room was very
large & comfortable. The parking was a little hard to find but safe &
secure. Breakfast in the hotel was cheap & quick. Would definitely stay
here again.
Location made it easy to pop in & out. Room was VERY small, but we had
an inner room so it was very quiet. My hairdryer blew the fuse each time
I used it, but it was fixed quickly. They advertise internet, but the
connection is slower than the first dial-up. A good price for a good
location. We'd stay there again.

I picked this hotel for it's location and affordability. But when I
called, the rooms I wanted weren't available so I was upgraded to an
executive room for the price of a superior room (I was aiming for a
$89/night room, but ended up booking a $145/night room).
The good points: The location was absolutely great. In the heart of
downtown, we were close to everything we could possibly wish for. The
area was safe and close to many many eateries and lots of shopping. A
10-15 minute walk from all the museums and attractions. The front desk
staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was very clean, and had
everything we needed including a fridge. We had a "Jacuzzi bathtub" that
was superb!
The mediocre points: The building is old, and so are the fittings and
some of the furniture. It added to a sort-of "colonial" feel, but I'm
not sure that was entirely positive. For $145/night, it didn't feel
worth it. Our view was basically a narrow opening facing all the windows
of the other rooms. This did make the room very quiet... which is what I
wanted compared to the alternative (great view but too noisy). The
corridors of the hotel were a little creepy, and there didn't seem to be
any security at the front desk, considering we were in the heart of
downtown Victoria.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel, but only if you get
the affordable rooms (because it wasn't worth the upgrade). And also if
you don't mind (or maybe if you prefer) the old building and the old
Victorian furniture and fittings, this is a good place to go.

My husbands professional organization was holding a conference in this
hotel. so we booked our room there as well. The staff on the telephone
seemed friendly but conversation was difficult in the extreme as their
English was very poor and hard to understand. Upon arrival the outside
of the hotel was very convenient and attractive, and the room was large
and spacious. We were told recent renovations had been done, and new
paint was evident as were some upgrades to the bathroom but by and large
the bathroom was outdated.
I expected this hotel to be nicer than what we got. The lobby and indeed
both rooms we had were bizarre. Front desk staff was nice. Our first
room appeared to be designed as an annex for the next room over if those
people wanted two beds. It was extremely small, and after 2 hours with
the heat on it was still 19 degrees C (brrrr). We asked for a room with
heat and they gave us a "double upgrade" to the room layout another
reviewer mentioned (the one with the strange bathroom, though to be
honest our first bathroom was strange as well). This room had a tub with
jets, which was about the only good feature i can name. The rest of the
experience was just okay. At one point we sat on the bed and a side
table fell off the wall, and the bed itself was uncomfortable.
This hotel wasn't horrible, but my suggestion would be to keep
looking...

I stayed here one night on business in May 2008. The location is
extremely convenient as the hotel is in the heart of the business
district. However, I would not stay here again. While some called the
hotel charming, I disagree. It is a little older and felt quite dated.
Unfortunately, my room had a strong lingering odour from the cleaning
products used to clean it. The sink is not located in the bathroom, but
outside opposite the foot of the bed. The sink had a leak and the carpet
was soaked. Overall, I was not impressed by the hotel. I would not stay
here again, and I will not be recommending it to my friends. |
